Postcard Printing Techniques

There are many techniques used to print postcards over time. The techniques changed and the quality improved in general bout modern cards may not be as beautiful as they were in the Golden Age of postcards. I was going to write a breif description here but found that the Metropolitan Postcard Club of New York City had a much more detailed and comprehensive discussion than I ever conceived of. This is an enlargement of a printed postcard showing how the dots of color are printed to give us an image such as the large one shown below.

During the printing process, each color is applied independent of the other. If the plates are not exactly alingned or the paper slips between colors, the result is such as the below detail, where the blue does not go where it should.
